Shaping the future of HIV prevention in New Orleans

HIV community advocates, public health professionals, innovators, and technologists joined us for open-innovation and human-centered design programming to catalyze new ideas to end the HIV epidemic.

The HIV Innovation Sprint enabled connection and collaboration across the New Orleans ecosystem all in support of developing and advancing new ideas for HIV prevention. There was no cost to join – a collaborative spirit and an open mind were all that was needed.

We started with Discovery Day at Propeller in New Orleans. A diverse group of people interested in HIV prevention joined us to explore challenges, opportunities, and resources. The event was led by an experienced team of innovators from the Digital Health Institute for Transformation (DHIT).

We came back together for the two-day Design Challenge at Propeller. Here teams were formed to come up with creative, innovative, and bold ideas for HIV prevention. Participants were challenged to ideate and refine through a process of design thinking, supported by subject matter experts. From there, only two teams were selected to move forward.

The next stage called for an advancement of the winning teams' ideas over eight weeks through the Design Sprint. Selected teams went to work on developing and refining their ideas to help accelerate the end of the HIV epidemic. DHIT facilitated this ongoing work and provided the knowledge and support needed to build promising innovations.

The winning teams' solutions were presented at the annual Digital Health Summit, sponsored by the North Carolina Health Innovation District, on March 19, 2025 in Charlotte, N.C. Health innovators from across the nation got to hear what the teams have come up with. At the summit, teams got an opportunity to receive valuable input and bring new community partners on board.
